Carroll County factory fire continues to smolder

Firefighters were still on the scene hours later.

Firefighters are still battling hot spots nearly 24 hours after a fire burned a Carrollton plastic equipment plant to the ground, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Superior Recreational Products, which is in the 1000 block of Columbia Drive, caught fire about 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Carrollton police told the news station. The fire raged for at least three hours, gutting the building and collapsing the roof, before it was contained.

About 60 firefighters responded to the blaze, Carrollton battalion chief Allen English told Channel 2. Crews were still dousing the building with water Friday afternoon to put out small, secondary flare-ups.

Once the fire is fully extinguished, investigators will head inside to try to determine its cause.

Allen said two employees were inside the 80,000-square-foot facility when it caught fire, but they were able to escape without injuries.

“They ... were running some kind of piece of equipment in the building at the time of the fire,” he said.

The plant manufactures plastic playground and recreational equipment and employs about 100 people. Allen said Superior Recreational Products is in an older building with no sprinkler system.

Old Breman Road to Adamson Industrial Boulevard is closed until further notice, police said.
