A driver arrested on a DUI charge after a vehicle was discovered dangling from the fourth level of a Buckhead parking deck was trying to stop another vehicle in front of her, Atlanta police said Friday.

The incident happened Thursday night in the 2500 block of Piedmont Road near Morosgo Drive.

According to a report police released Friday, Madison Merritt “appeared to be trying to stop another vehicle in front of her but was unable to and began speeding to try to catch up.

“Instead of turning up the next level, she sped forward into the wire suspension cables, sending her car over the edge of the parking deck of the 4th floor.”

When a police officer approached the vehicle, Merritt was inside near the front passenger side of the vehicle.

“She appeared to be highly intoxicated and incoherent and didn’t know where she was,” police said in the report.

The officer opened the rear left passenger door, reached in and pulled Merritt out to safety.

Merritt was placed in the officer’s patrol car because she was stammering in her speech and could barely stand up, police said in the report.

She was later taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for observation and was in police custody Friday afternoon.

“There was substantial damage done to the parking structure and her vehicle was impounded … for safe keeping,” police said.
