Georgia teacher charged with DUI and homicide released on bond

Channel 2's Rikki Klaus reports.

A Walton County teacher accused of driving under the influence at the time of a fatal weekend wreck has been released on bond, according to Channel 2 Action News.

Meghan Caldwell, a teacher at Loganville High School, was alone when she ran a stoplight on Highway 316 in the predawn hours of March 19, Bartow County sheriff’s Capt. Matt Guthas said.

Her 2012 Kia Sorrento collided with the driver’s side of a 2004 Ford Mustang as it traveled northbound on Patrick Mill Road, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported.

Caldwell, 24, of Loganville, was taken to the hospital, but released about six hours later, Guthas said. Investigators on the scene determined she was driving under influence and arrested her.

The driver of the Mustang, Cathy Moore, 41, of Flowery Branch, and passenger Bradley Atha, 36, of Dacula, died at the scene, Guthas said. An ambulance took a third passenger to the hospital for treatment, where he remained Monday in unknown condition.

Walton County Public Schools confirmed to Channel 2 Tuesday that Caldwell is a teacher with the district, but did not comment on the fatal wreck. School records show Caldwell teaches language arts at Loganville High.

Walton schools spokeswoman Kim Embry told the Loganville News that Caldwell is on administrative leave pending the outcome of the law enforcement investigation.

She is charged with serious injury by motor vehicle, driving under the influence, two counts of homicide by vehicle in the first degree and a red light violation, Guthas said.
