A 22-year-old Atlanta street gang member has been convicted of murder and was sentenced Thursday to life in prison plus 50 years without the possibility of parole, authorities said.

Ramsey Bunkley fatally shot 19-year-old Michael Gary in the back of the head as he was trying to run from an attempted armed robbery in September 2015, the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release.

Gary was with two friends, Quentarious Cook and Jordan Bembry, in a wooded area near the Camelot Club Condos on Old National Highway because they wanted to fire their handguns in a remote location, the release said.

While they were walking in the woods, Bunkley and another unidentified man came up behind the victims, held up a firearm and said “give it up,” the release said.

Bembry ran away, Cook gave his wallet and jewelry to Bunkley, and Gary attempted to run away but was shot in the back of the head, severing his spine, according to the release said. He died at the scene.

Bembry and Cook were able to identify Bunkley in a photographic lineup conducted by the Fulton County Police Department, the release said.

In January 2016, Bunkley appeared in Fulton County Superior Court on an unrelated matter and was arrested by the Fulton County Sheriff’s Department, the release said.

Bunkley was found guilty of participation in criminal street gang activity, murder, felony murder, armed robbery, criminal attempt to commit armed robbery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, the release said.
