One man accused of shooting another man Saturday evening is in police custody after a SWAT standoff in southwest Atlanta, police said.

Police and homicide investigators were warned about 6 p.m. the suspected gunman, Nathaniel Mathis, may have barricaded himself inside the residence at 72 Polar Rock Road so SWAT was alerted, Kim Jones, a spokeswoman for Atlanta police said.

Neighbors in the area were ordered to stay in their homes.

One neighbor spoke to Channel 2 Action News through a screen door.

“It kind of worries me a bit because there’s children that play around here and this is a park, like a family environment,” the neighbor said.

Family members of both men involved told Channel 2 the gunman killed his sister’s boyfriend, 34-year-old Rod Benton.

A woman who identified herself to Channel 2 as the gunman’s mother said she would have been able to talk some sense into her son, but police wouldn’t let her near the scene.

A standoff lasted more than four hours before SWAT arrested Mathis without incident, Jones said.

Murder warrants are expected to be filed against Mathis, Jones said.

In 2022, Georgia Power projected its winter peak electricity demand would grow by about 400 megawatts by 2031. Since then, Georgia has experienced a boom of data centers, which require a large load of electricty to run, and Georgia Power's recent forecast shows peak demand growing by 20 times the 400-megawatt estimate from just three years ago.
