A 32-year-old man is jailed on several charges after he almost drove into a Hall County deputy after he fled a traffic stop, the sheriff’s office said.

Jeremy Jebb Wilkerson of Buford is charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer after the incident early Tuesday, deputy Stephen Wilbanks said in a news release.

Just after 1 a.m., deputies tried to stop a speeding car in the 2100 block of Browns Bridge Road, Wilbanks said. The car turned into a motel parking lot and backed into a parking space.

As the deputy approached, Wilkerson backed the car out of the space, didn’t obey the deputy’s commands and drove away, just missing the deputy, Wilbanks said.

Gainesville police saw the car in the area of Gould Road, and it stopped at a nearby gas station after it had mechanical problems, Wilbanks said. Wilkerson ran, but officers caught him.

No one was injured, Wilbanks said.

Wilkerson is in the Hall County jail without bond, Wilbanks said. He’s also charged with fleeing/eluding an officer, obstruction of an officer, possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of drug objects, speeding, driving with a suspended license, crossing the guard line and probation violation.
