Cobb County police are investigating how an 11-year-old boy accidentally shot a 14-year-old girl.

Destiny McNichols was found lying in the middle of a stairwell at the Sierra Forest apartments on Mableton Parkway, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Witnesses said the boy was found with a handgun.

“I poked my head out and I see the girl laying right there on the ground and she was bleeding,” witness Ghervon Blue told the news station. “The boy was screaming that he shot her by accident and he was crying. I guess he was wondering what to do next.”

It was unclear what their relationship was.

McNichols was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital and then Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, where she later died, Channel 2 reported.

No charges have been filed in the case.
