Officials in Marietta said they have thwarted a fake-check scam that involved a city bank account.

During the week of Jan. 1, officials found checks that appeared to be issued by the city that were being distributed to individuals, spokeswoman Lindsey Wiles said in an email.

Due to security procedures, the city hasn’t lost any money due to this fraudulent activity, Wiles said.

Officials are working with bank representatives and law enforcement to stop the activity and prosecute the people responsible, Wiles said.

Anyone who thinks they may have received unsolicited city funds should contact Michelle Collings at 770-794-5434.
