A Carroll County man shot his wife and then himself Sunday, police said.

The shooting happened on Tulip Way in Carrollton about 3 p.m. Jonathan Mayfield, 41, shot and killed Martha Mayfield, 42, and then shot himself, officials told Channel 2 Action News.

The Carrollton couple had filed for divorce earlier this month, Carrollton police Chief Deputy Brad Robinson said. They had been married 17 years, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Kitty Martin Powell set up a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe.com, where she asks for help with funeral expenses for Martha Mayfield.

She was a mother of two children and a grandmother, Powell states.

“Due to the circumstances, life insurance money will be held in a probate state,” Powell wrote.

The family also needs help to fund moving “from their life-long home, where murder happened.”
