A man was shot and killed by a Paulding County sheriff’s deputy Thursday while he was being served a warrant at a home on Township Road just outside of Hiram, officials said.

Family members let deputies inside the home and told them the suspect was in the basement, Paulding sheriff’s Sgt. Ashley Henson said.

The man was identified as 35-year-old Brandon Lee Bohanan by family, who said he was unarmed during the shooting, Channel 2 Action News reported. The identity of the deputy was not released.

Deputies gave Bohanan verbal commands, but he did not comply, Henson said. At one point, there was a confrontation and a deputy shot and killed him.

The deputy involved is OK, Channel 2 reported.

Authorities told the news station Bohanan had two warrants out for his arrest in two counties.

The GBI is involved in the investigation, which is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings in Georgia.

No other details have been released.

The GBI has investigated 68 officer-involved shootings in 2017. Last year, Georgia had 77 officer-involved shootings.
