A manhunt was called off after several hours for the person who shot a Chattanooga police officer multiple times Thursday morning, according to the Chattanooga Times Free Press.

The officer, who was not identified, was released from the hospital, the paper reported.

About 9:20 a.m., the officer was checking out an abandoned house when a man left the building and turned back to fire at the officer. Police Chief Fred Fletcher said he did not know a specific reason the officer was checking out the house.

“A lot of bad stuff goes on in abandoned houses,” Fletcher said. “We check them regularly. That is just good community policing.”

Agents from the FBI and the Drug Enforcement Administration helped in the search for the shooter. Officers went door to door checking houses, and SWAT teams from multiple agencies were deployed, the paper reported.

Police are offering a $6,000 reward for information that leads to the shooter's arrest.

“Our primary concern is taking this violent bad guy off the street,” Fletcher said.
