One Georgia State University student is in custody and another is in the hospital after a stabbing early Tuesday inside one of the school’s dorms.

University and Atlanta police responded to a call of a fight between the students in Piedmont North, GSU police chief Joe Spillane said.

One was found in the the laundry room of building B with several stab wounds. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in stable condition. The other student was located by police in the dorm lobby and detained.

“After interviewing witnesses,” Spillane said, “it was determined that the two males know each other and had an ongoing dispute. The male who was stabbed was actively looking for the male who stabbed him.”

When he found him, Spillane said, the two fought.

The student in custody has been charged with aggravated assault. The injured student faces a charge of simple battery, Spillane said.

The names of the students have not been released.

In 2022, Georgia Power projected its winter peak electricity demand would grow by about 400 megawatts by 2031. Since then, Georgia has experienced a boom of data centers, which require a large load of electricty to run, and Georgia Power's recent forecast shows peak demand growing by 20 times the 400-megawatt estimate from just three years ago.
