An Atlanta Public Schools teacher was arrested in Norfolk, Va., on Tuesday, police said.

Philania Patton was charged with simple assault and violation of a protective order, Norfolk police spokesman Daniel Hudson said. She is a teacher at Cascade Elementary.

She has been released from custody.

Patton was in Norfolk for a court appearance regarding custody of her grandchild, according to an email she sent to Channel 2 Action News.

Patton was arrested after a citizen appeared in Magistrate Court in Norfolk to secure the charges, Hudson said.
