How a portion of I-20 buckling will affect your commute

Atlanta commuters are in for yet another headache this afternoon. But it hopefully won’t last too long.

Westbound Interstate 20 between Candler and Gresham roads is currently closed after a section of the roadway buckled Monday. Transportation officials said around 3 p.m., however, that two to three lanes of the westbound portion of freeway should be reopened by 5 p.m. Monday. The full repair should be finished by noon Tuesday, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

LATEST: All lanes on I-20 west closed indefinitely

In the meantime, commuters who usually travel that route are being warned to steer clear and find alternatives. I-20 westbound traffic is being diverted off of the interstate at I-285 (north or south). No traffic from either I-285 north or south is being allowed to exit onto I-20 west, GDOT said.

Traffic is being diverted from I-20 West to either I-285 North or I-285 South. I-20 West entrance ramps inside the Perimeter at Columbia Drive, Candler Road and Flat Shoals Road are closed.

I-285 has been approved as the primary detour with the following alternate routes:

They confirmed that Atlanta Gas Light was performing work on the scene but did not specify what caused the portion of freeway to buckle. There was no explosion.

Return for updates.
