Body found in Hall County park bathroom identified

Human remains discovered in October wrapped in a blanket inside a park bathroom have been identified.

Through DNA tests, the body was identified as Kayla Nelson, 21, who was also known as Kayla Weil, according to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office. She was last seen in June and was reported missing from Flowery Branch in September by relatives, Sgt. Mark Mitchell said in a news release.

The body was found Oct. 24 inside one of the bathrooms at Chestnut Ridge Park, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers property that was closed to the public several years ago, officials said. At the time, authorities were unable to determine “anything regarding gender, age or identity,” because of the body’s “advanced stage of decomposition,” Mitchell said.

A crew contracted to clean the park area found the remains, which “had been in place for an extended period of time,” according to the release.

The park is currently under a long-term lease by the Lake Lanier Islands Development Authority, but remains closed.

The case is still under investigation, authorities said.
