Police said the gun was brought to Blossomwood Elementary School by a second-grader, WAAY reported. Police said the shooting occurred in a physical education class and that a security official intervened, the television station reported.

Huntsville police Chief Mark McMurray said the injured student was taken to a hospital for treatment but was not seriously injured. McMurray added that the student who brought the gun did not intend to hurt anyone but was showing it off when it accidentally discharged, AL.com reported.

Police are treating the shooting as an accidental discharge between two students handling a small firearm, WAAY reported.

"If you have weapons at home, please be sure and lock them down," McMurray said at a news conference. "Please, if you're a parent of a small child and you have a weapon at home, take this opportunity to lock it down.

“Know where that weapon is. They have locks you can put on those weapons in your home,” McMurrray said. “You have places you can lock them down to keep these elementary school children away from them."
