Near the end of his life, in his 90s, illustrator E.H. Shepard created a few prints of the stoic, spare, black-and-white drawings that embodied the inimitable world of Winnie-the-Pooh, and added a few splashes of watercolor. CONTRIBUTED BY “WINNIE-THE-POOH: EXPLORING A CLASSIC”

“WINNIE-THE-POOH: EXPLORING A CLASSIC” AT THE HIGH MUSEUM OF ART

The story of the birth and miraculous rise of the bear’s empire is part of a new exhibit at the High Museum of Art, “Winnie-the-Pooh: Exploring a Classic.”

But Pooh had humble beginnings in a children’s book by A.A. Milne, with somewhat scruffy pen-and-ink drawings by E.H. Shepard.

The exhibit of more than 200 objects will include ore than 80 of E.H Shepard’s original pencil and pen-and-ink drawings for the four Pooh books, replicas of Christopher Robin Milne’s stuffed animals, which inspired characters in the stories and a handwritten 1926 letter from Milne to Shepard and photographs of the Milne family. Note: a musical version of A.A. Milne’s stories, “Winnie-the-Pooh,” created by the Alliance Theatre, will perform the show June 7-July 1 in the Rich Auditorium.

“Winnie-the-Pooh: Exploring a Classic” Through Sept. 2. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday. $14.50, ages 6 and older; free for children 5 and younger and members. High Museum of Art, 1280 Peachtree St., Atlanta. 404-733-4400, high.org.
