Hiking is in − more than 37 million Americans went hiking in 2015, according to statistics portal Statista − and winter weather won't slow down hardcore hiking enthusiasts.

From weekend warriors to Appalachian Trail thru-hikers, it's important to have the right gear for the weather, something that isn't always cheap. According to outdoor retailer REI, it can cost up to $4,000 to outfit a hiker for the Appalachian Trail.
