Judge sends Gucci Mane to psychiatric hospital
A judge has ordered Atlanta rapper Gucci Mane to a psychiatric hospital where he will undergo tests to determine mental competency.
Radric Davis, the rapper's given name, appeared before Fulton County Superior Court Judge John Goger Monday for allegedly violating terms of his probation, according to a transport order. Davis' attorney, Michael Holmes, filed a "special plea of mental incompetency" on behalf of his client, who has battled drug problems in the past.
The rapper was sent to Anchor Hospital, a 111-bed psychiatric and chemical dependency treatment facility near Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
Records show Davis has been in the Fulton County Jail at least five times since 2005 on drug, aggravated assault and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charges. Monday marked the second time in a year he's been incarcerated for violating terms of his probation.
Davis was arrested two other times last year but ultimately not charged with a crime. In December, Henry County police arrested two people at the home Davis' protege, Waka Flocka Flame, for possession of a minor amount of marijuana. A month earlier, Davis was briefly jailed after an off-duty police officer reported seeing a white Hummer being driven recklessly on Northside Drive. Dispatched officers saw the Hummer outside an auto body shop where the rapper was arguing with another man.
Officers had to use pepper spray to subdue Davis. Charges were dropped for "want of prosecution."
