Demolition of the Metro Atlanta Chamber building in downtown Atlanta will begin in the first quarter of 2017, Georgia World Congress Center officials say.

The chamber offices, which the GWCC Authority bought for $10.5 million earlier this year, will be torn down to add greenspace to Centennial Olympic Park. The chamber is moving to the 34th floor of the 191 Peachtree building downtown

The demolition is part of a $25 million GWCCA campaign to enhance the park, which is owned by the Congress Center. Enhancement plans include space for a restaurant, devoting more acreage for concerts and festivals and upgrading water features.

Colorado architectural firm DTJ Design will be paid $1.13 million to reimagine Centennial.

Demolishing the chamber building will add to greenspace and open up views of the Congress Center’s Marietta Street entrance and the nearby College Football Hall of Fame. The chamber building, which sits on a corner adjoining the park, currently blocks that view.
