Atlanta airport restarts composting facility project

Hartsfield-Jackson International is relaunching a project to build and operate a composting and recycling facility at the world’s busiest airport.

The airport initially invited companies to submit proposals in February for “Green Acres ATL Energy Park,” which would be built south of the fifth runway off Forest Parkway in Clayton County. The facility would compost and recycle airport waste and yard trimmings from the City of Atlanta’s public works, ultimately processing 200,000 tons of waste annually.

But by April the airport had canceled the procurement process after receiving a “significant amount of questions” about the requirements. The airport said it has clarified and revised documents on the requirements, and this week reissued the request for proposals.

Hartsfield-Jackson plans to hold a meeting July 28 at 2 p.m. at its technical support campus for companies interested in the project.
