Downtown Atlanta’s historic Candler Building to become Curio Hotel

One of downtown Atlanta’s iconic structures — the Candler Building — is being transformed into a Curio hotel, a luxury brand under the Hilton flag, the chain announced Friday.

Hilton plans to renovate the building and open it as a 265-guestroom hotel featuring oversized king, double queen and suite rooms. The chain said the main level of the hotel will feature the building’s Georgia-white marble grand staircase, original Tiffany windows, a restaurant and a bar.

The hotel, which is being developed by Development Services Group and interior designer Nicole Harris, will also have meeting and event space.

“We are excited to partner with Stephen Miller and the team at REM Associates to bring the Curio collection to Atlanta’s downtown community,” Matt Wehling, senior vice president for Hilton North America development, said in a release. “Paying homage to the iconic Candler building and Atlanta’s heritage, Candler Hotel Atlanta will be a wonderful addition to our portfolio and is an ideal illustration of how Curio hotels are embracing and preserving significant structures across the U.S.”

Built in 1906, the Candler Building was Atlanta’s first steel skyscraper. It was developed by Coca-Cola’s Asa Candler and at 17 stories tall, was one of the tallest buildings in the city.

The new hotel is set to open in late 2017 following the renovations.
