Delta Air Lines has applied for antitrust immunity for a joint venture with Grupo Aeromexico for flights between the United States and Mexico.

Atlanta-based Delta said if its application to the U.S. Department of Transportation is approved, it would create a $1.5 billion joint venture. Aeromexico and Delta, which started their partnership in 1994, said they expect to expand their networks in Mexico and the United States if the joint venture is approved.

Delta has used similar federal antitrust immunity for joint ventures with Virgin Atlantic and with Air France-KLM and Alitalia to coordinate schedules and prices and to share revenue on trans-Atlantic flights.
