Commercial real estate developer OliverMcMillan recently planted four 35-foot-tall oak trees and completed other landscaping around the $1 billion Buckhead Atlanta project.

The Highbeam overcup oaks were grown by Athens-based Select Trees.

The oak trees' leaves will change to yellow and bronze-red in the fall.

The Buckhead Atlanta develper, OliverMcMillan, says that in the winter the oak trees' gray-brown branches and trunk will assume a beautiful texture that presents a sculptural silhouette.

The landscape architect for the project is Hoerr Schaudt Landscape Architects of Chicago.

“Working with OliverMcMillan, we initiated a landscape design for the development that prioritizes urban horticulture and celebrates all four seasons," said Douglas Hoerr, a senior partner of the landscape architect firm.

Hoerr Schaudt was the principal landscape architect for Chicago's Magnificent Mile, a stretch of upscale shops and restaurants in the city.

"We wanted a mature tree canopy and eclectic elements that evoke the vibrancy of a thriving neighborhood,” Hoerr said.

'Mature trees large enough to create real summer shade are an important component of the plan," Hoerr said.

OliverMcMillan identified the trees two years ago for cultivation specifically for Buckhead Atlanta, according to Hunter Richardson, managing director of development at OliverMcMillan.

The oaks are the largest possible trees that can be transported without having to request street closures, OliverMcMillan said.

The completed Buckhead Atlanta project will include 300,000 square feet of retail stores, restaurants and cafes.

The project will have more than 100,000 square feet of office space.

The project will also feature 370 luxury high-rise residences.

Buckhead Atlanta will feature luxury shopping, dining, entertainment, residential and office space.

The development is located on 8 acres across six city blocks at the intersection of Peachtree and East Paces Ferry roads.

The project is designed to fit seamlessly into the existing Buckhead Village.

Buckhead Atlanta covers about 1.5 million square feet of area.
