Postal Service an example of mismanaged government waste

The U.S. Postal Service recently announced it would increase the time for mail delivery. Taxpayers have been bailing them out for years due to waste, union contracts and golden retirement plans. In addition, why don’t they eliminate delivering junk mail? It is amazing that UPS, FedEx, and Amazon run so efficiently and show profits every year. Government programs are a failure, mismanaged and cost taxpayers billions of dollars each year. Wake up people, the federal government’s programs and services should be left up to private industry and competition.

Give unvaccinated their freedom and responsibility for actions

Congratulations to the AJC for trying to promote the acceptance of vaccinations and masks.

The author of “‘You do you’ time is over; get the shot” (Voices, Sept. 30) does a nice and polite job of expressing the increasing frustration of those who have been vaccinated and understand the importance of masks in certain circumstances. It seems there is a segment of the public that lacks the common sense, courtesy, interest in self-preservation or patriotism to recognize the need for these mitigation efforts. Fortunately, that group is getting smaller due to accepting science, saving their job, or death.

Let’s separate the unvaccinated as much as possible (in work, social, and health care environments). Give them full freedom and full responsibility for their actions and consequences. Then, do nothing more for them than extend our sympathy and keep our fingers crossed that COVID does not cause the extinction of that species (and the Republican politicians who have encouraged their resistance).

Solution posed to help labor shortage and illegal immigration

Two commonly accepted issues facing the U.S. are a labor shortage and illegal immigration. A possible solution to ease both problems would be for those wanting to enter the U.S. at our Southern border to be fingerprinted, photographed, contact information provided (probably a cell phone number) and vaccinated for COVID-19. Then each would have 90 days to find employment, with the immigrants reporting to the INS their work information when finding a job. This process could be a new work status. It would help ease the labor shortage, boost the economy and reduce the strain on our communities.

Latest oil spill points out need for environmental justice

Re: “Ship’s anchor among possible causes of California oil spill” (Around the world, Oct. 5), a story about the event that killed wildlife and dirtied Orange County beaches, who should we blame?

Burning uncapped carbon buried millions of years ago has powered our economy. But fewer pipelines should exist now if findings in 1977 by scientists about climate change had been respected. Should we stop all fossil fuel production now? No. It should be gradual. Is an annual rising carbon tax too easy on them? No. We could make them pay cashback payments to low-income communities and pay for job retraining when fossil workers lose their jobs. That would incentivize clean energy as it becomes affordable to all. Ask President Biden to add a carbon price with community protection to the Build Back Better Act. That’s environmental justice.
