U.S. heading down dangerous path

Throughout history you will find countries that self-destructed because of internal strife. This country, the “United” States of America seems to be heading down a similar path. No matter who gets elected to lead us there is always someone who wants to undermine his/her efforts. If the scientists are correct, this world has been around for more than 300 million years and, as we humans know it, for several thousand years. Civilizations have flourished and vanished. In most of these cases they have imploded, i.e., from internal struggles to determine who should be the leader and for how long. In this wonderful country of ours we are experiencing similar activities. We elect a president by a majority and rely on him/her to guide us along the best path possible. Currently we are not doing that. Quite possibly our elected officials may make mistakes. But let’s not exacerbate the situation by dreaming up ways to undermine our leaders before they have had the chance to do their job. Otherwise we may not continue to be the shining light that many countries look up to and depend on.

More should be done to expand VA care

The letter “Closing of VA clinics good news for vets,” May 12, is an absolute misstatement concerning the care received by most vets. My husband can email a problem to his primary care doctor at night, receive a positive answer next morning, and be seen that day. He can walk in with an illness and be seen within an hour. With the possible exception of some urgent care facilities, where is such access even possible in private practices? He has used Veterans Administration health services since 2000 and praises both the outside clinic and the great care at the DeKalb VA hospital’s clinics. We believe that more (not less) should be done to expand these services and educate the public to the superb work an overworked agency is trying to provide to our military vets.
