Trump should release tax returns

Following the precipitous and (to put it mildly) questionable firing by President Trump of FBI Director James Comey, there is one perfectly simple solution to the mystery as to whether the Trump presidential campaign — or Trump himself , and or any family members — had any illegal or dubious business connections with the Russian federation. The solution: simply convince President Trump to release his past and current federal tax returns. Such an act, which would determine if President Trump has, or had, any illegal relations with the Russian government would be both transparent and enlightening. Additionally, the issue of Trump’s possible relationship with any of Russia’s numerous influential oligarchs would put to rest all doubt as to just what, if any, Trump business dealings/agreements exist now or have in the past 10 to 15 years.

Abortion offers no choice for the baby

Nicholas Kristof (“Abortion provider’s memoir defends the need for choice,” Opinion, May 11) downplays the view of abortion as murder largely because he sees that perspective primarily as a Christian notion which isn’t universally shared within the faith.

At the very heart of the centuries-old abortion debate, however, is a central question: Does the conception of a human sperm and egg immediately produce a human being who is fundamentally different from any other child experiencing the light of birth?

If, for example, the product of conception is not a human person but merely an extension of or a growth within a woman’s body, then there’s nothing worthy of debate.

But if, instead, this is a human person after all — albeit in a yet-underdeveloped, ultra-dependent form — then an honest discussion should take us in a decidedly different direction toward a default of protection and nurturing. The child within, after all, is afforded no say in the matter, so abortion offers him/her no choice.
