In the '20s, it wasn't uncommon to still see a few horse-driven buggies downtown in Atlanta. But as this shot of Five Points demonstrates, the automobile was clearly becoming the new standard of transportation. AJC PHOTO ARCHIVES

Sculptor Augustus Lukeman (hand on sculpture) inspects the head of Robert E. Lee in this 1928 photograph. Lukeman, who began work on the carving in 1926, was the second sculptor to work on the project. His design formed the basis of the sculpture completed this spring. Gutzon Borglum began work on the mountain in 1923 but left in 1925. His beginning efforts were removed from the mountain. AJC PHOTO ARCHIVES
