Photos: Midcentury modern designer redo on East Lake Home Tour

Designer Brian Patrick Flynn did a complete makeover of this DeKalb County home shortly before homeowners Katherine Madeira and Chris Drobny bought it in 2015. The 1,640-square-foot ranch home has three bedrooms, two baths, and a lot of style.

Inside the house, quirky artwork includes a skull canvas framed print from Pottery Barn atop the Mid-Century Console from West Elm, both of which the homeowners purchased after they moved in.

While most of the home came furnished after Flynn renovated it, Drobny and Madeira bought the Mid-Century Console, with beveled edges, and Clover Coffee Table from West Elm at Ponce City Market.

Vaulted ceilings with wood beams and grasscloth wallcoverings are among some of the favorite design elements in the East Lake home. For the walls, the owners like picking up items from World Market, IKEA, Ballard Designs and various artists who show at The Highlander in Atlanta.

The coffee table is one of the few pieces of furniture that Madeira and Drobny bought for the home. The walnut Clover Coffee Table is from West Elm at Ponce City Market, which opened around the same time they bought the house. The Nelson Saucer Pendant Lamp is from Design Within Reach.

A collection of metallic and wood accessories fit with the home's midcentury modern and whimsical style, with grasscloth wallcoverings by Kravit in the background.

Designer Brian Patrick Flynn left the cat print when they purchased his former home. It fits Madeira, whose nickname was "Kitty" when she was an Atlanta Rollergirl.

Another feature that came with the home was many of the light fixtures. Each one is different, and Madeira especially likes the use of big shapes, such as the fixture in her kitchen.

Drobny, who is 6 feet tall, likes the kitchen layout and vaulted ceiling. "I can reach everything when I'm cooking. That's a very helpful thing when you're an in-home cook," Drobny said.

The homeowners love the functionality of their small kitchen. Ikea's Abstrakt Grey cabinets were a budget-friendly choice, and Kitchen Complete set up the space when it was renovated by the previous owners.

When it’s time to eat, the custom dining table can extend to seat 10 or fold to create two four-top tables. Madeira says the table and banquette, which is covered in vinyl, are eye-catching and practical items.

The guest bath is tiled from floor to ceiling, with wood ceilings like the rest of the house. The style of the tile and vanity fit with the home's midcentury modern design. The framed cow print is by Jennifer Meyers, and purchased from Pottery Barn.

Furniture from Rooms to Go injects more color into the basement living area of the split-level ranch home and provides comfortable seating for TV watching. The chocolate drapes with purple trim were among the window treatments that the previous owner left in the home. The diptych piece, called "Love Plant," is by Amy Mann, a friend and former Atlanta Rollergirls teammate of Madeira.

A sideboard from the 1970s gets its violet luster from auto body paint. The piece was transformed into a console to hold media components when Flynn renovated the home.

Drobny, a Microsoft consultant, has a home office part of the downstairs guest room, complete with a built-in desk and guest bed. The space came fully furnished when he and Madeira bought the home.

Fabric panels bring pizzazz to the closet doors in the basement guest room. A door upholstered in leather and accented with nail head trim makes the lower-level space anything but drab.

Going back upstairs, the metallic wall divider adds visual interest with geometric design and a planter while separating the upstairs from the main level.

More geometric patterns collide in the cool master bedroom, including George Nelson Bubble Lamp Ball pendants from Design Within Reach.

Madeira and Drobny's closet boasts storage and style. Fabric lines the walls and ceiling of the closet, which has hardwood floors. "It's very luxurious," Madeira said.

Hexagonal tile is a nod to midcentury style while the mirrored wood cabinet that serves as a vanity bring modern and rustic elements into the master bathroom.

One of the draws for Madeira and Drobny was the abundance of outdoor space, with four separate areas to entertain outside. The bottom floor includes two porches. Lime chairs, a bistro table, a bench, an accent table and cushions from World Market add a punch of color underneath the pergola, which is decorated with lanterns.

There's a mix of styles and seating options in another outdoor space, including the Morocco sectional in charcoal and oval lounge chair from Crate and Barrel. The pergola provides shading and a place to add hanging baskets near a built-in planter. Dogs Kerrigan and Fiona get to play in the "designer dog run" with faux grass.

Homeowners Katherine Madeira and Chris Drobny bought their home, which was built in 1955, from designer Brian Patrick Flynn. Madeira works for SunGard Public Sector, which provides software solutions for public administration and public safety; Drobny is a Microsoft consultant. The home will be on the 2016 East Lake Tour of Homes on Sept. 10-11.
