When “Squid Game” came to Netflix, it dominated the charts as the most viewed streaming title in October 2021. Now, the deadly drama’s creator has announced that a second season is coming.
“I want to ask the question, ‘Is true solidarity between humans possible?’” Hwang Dong-hyuk, director, writer and executive producer, told Vanity Fair.
The series caused quite the controversy when it the first episode streamed on Netflix.
“It took 12 years to bring the first season of ‘Squid Game’ to life last year,” Hwang wrote in a letter, shared on the Netflix Instagram account. “But it took 12 days for ‘Squid Game’ to become the most popular Netflix series ever.”
Netflix’s Twitter account posted a heart-pounding, 10-second long teaser focusing on a fictional eyeball disguised as a camera, with creepy singing in the background.
Hwang shared that antagonist The Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) and protagonist Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) would be returning and that the audience will finally meet Young-hee’s boyfriend.
“Squid Game” season two will be released late 2023 or early 2024.
