Netflix released a first look at Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe in the upcoming drama, “Blonde,” which is an ahistorical retelling of the life of the iconic Hollywood star. Based on the 2000 Joyce Carol Oates novel by the same name, which tells the story of Monroe’s life from when she was a young Norma Jeane, this long-awaited film is set to come out later this year. The film is reportedly rated NC-17 for its graphic sexual content.
The trailer features the “Knives Out” star transformed into the blonde bombshell, as she showcases a flurry of emotions in the star’s tragic life. Set to a solemn rendition of Monroe’s own “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend,” the trailer shows all the old Hollywood glamour the film promises to deliver.
“We’d pore over every detail in the photo and debate what was happening in it. The first question was always, ‘What was Norma Jeane feeling here?’ We wanted to tell the human side of her story,” Armas said in an interview with Netflix’s Queue about the project. “I found that to be the most daring, unapologetic, and feminist take on her story that I had ever seen.”
New Zealand-born director and screenwriter Andrew Dominik is known for his epic historical films, such as his 2007 western, “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.”
“I want to tell the story of Norma Jean as a central figure in a fairytale; an orphan child lost in the woods of Hollywood, being consumed by that great icon of the twentieth century,” Dominik says about the film.
The film also stars Adrien Brody, Bobby Canavalle and Toby Huss, among others.
“Blonde” is set to release September 23 and will be available exclusively on Netflix.
