Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Katie Walls explains the impact here in Georgia.

An Atlanta chef will have to wait awhile to defend his Best Shrimp and Grits title.

The Jekyll Island Shrimp and Grits festival, which was set to be held Sept. 15-17, has been cancelled following Gov. Nathan Deal’s mandatory evacuation of Glynn County.

“This cancellation is the prudent decision based on the potential impact of Hurricane Irma, and to ensure the safety of guests and vendors,” a prepared statement reads. “We encourage all visitors to take proper action for the safety of their homes and loved ones. At this point, we have no concrete plans to reschedule the festival and will be in touch as we review potential options.”

West Egg chef Andrew Smith took top honors at the Jekyll Island Shrimp and Grits Festival last year for his shrimp and grits recipe, and was prepared to defend his title this year against other Georgia chefs including Karen Patton of Sweet Potato Cafe in Stone Mountain. The event also typically features professional cooking competitions, a craft brew fest, arts and crafts merchants and live music.
