Is the second time the charm for CBS? The network might be rebooting the 15-year-old bewitching show “Charmed.”
The supernatural drama about the life and times of three siblings, who happened to be the most powerful good witches in existence premiered in 1998, and ran for eight seasons on The WB.
Vulture first reported CBS has ordered a pilot script of a new "Charmed" series, and hired "Party of Five" co-creator Chris Keyser to write the project, along with his partner Sydney Sidner.
Any potential revival for the show is still a long way off; CBS hasn’t yet committed to actually filming a pilot. But if the rumors are true, it begs the question: why reboot the series now?
Well if the numbers are any indication, "Charmed" still has a pretty ardent fanbase. According to market researchers at NPD Group, it's the second-most binge-watched show on video-on-demand services such as Netflix and Hulu.
And the show’s upcoming 15th anniversary has “Charmed” fans reminiscing about the show’s strengths.
Entertainment Weekly writes, "the show succeeded in creating a real family dynamic. The sisters always had chemistry, and you couldn't help but root for them to stick together and bicker about boys while simultaneously kicking butt."
Maybe the revival is because "witches are the new vampires," as one E! Online writer puts it. The potential "Charmed" reboot will join a slew of witchy TV shows, including Lifetime's "Witches of East End," The CW's "The Originals," and FX's "American Horror Story: Coven."
Or maybe it's just reboot season in TV Land. Just yesterday NBC announced a remake of Angela Lansbury's old drama "Murder, She Wrote" starring Octavia Butler. (Via The Hollywood Reporter)
