Private Quarters: Mountains meet Southern traditional in Decatur home

The Decatur home of Scott and Denise Bailey features porches.

A gas fireplace, custom built-in bookcases, upholstered chairs from Bungalow Classic and a drum ottoman from Kudzu Antiques come together to create a comfortable spot for reading in homeowner Scott Bailey's library.

Scott and Denise Bailey's front porch is more than 10 feet deep and runs the full length of the house. A table with seating for six at one end, and a bed swing from Savannah Swing Beds at the other end make the porch a comfortable place to watch the world go by. A large, deep front porch was one of Denise Bailey's main requirements for the five-bedroom home built by Lockman Homebuilding Co. in Decatur. "So many of the porches built today aren't deep enough to enjoy during the rain and have a comfortable seating arrangement, " she said.

"The mudroom is one of my favorite rooms of the house," said homeowner Denise Bailey. A slate-colored tile floor, custom shelves with a place for the dog's bowls, a pantry and a nook for her grandmother's chest gives the room its function. The trestle bench, made by The Global Craftsman in Cashiers, N.C., and bronze dog hooks make the room a fun space.

Bronze dog hooks, found at Reclamations in Highlands, N.C., add a whimsical touch to Denise and Scott Bailey's Decatur mudroom.

Green pendant lights, salvaged from a textile mill in South Carolina and purchased from Reclamations in Highlands, N.C., provide color, while the wood-planked ceiling adds natural warmth to the mudroom in Scott and Denise Bailey's Decatur home.

Pocket French doors lead into the library and are surrounded by dark brown built-in bookcases that homeowner Scott Bailey designed. Swing-arm fixtures, ordered through Masterpiece Lighting, shine light on the upper shelves.

The stand-up desk in the library was custom-made using an old scale as the base by The Global Craftsman in Cashiers, N.C. Chairs are from RH, and a folk art dog by the late Rev. Howard Finster is featured on top of the bookcase.

Across from the home's library, custom-ordered chairs focus on the large landscape by Barbara Brenner, which hangs above a couch from Bungalow Classic.

Homeowner Scott Bailey is not a fan of can lighting, so the family chose interesting fixtures for just about every room. The "birdcage" fixture in the sitting room was found at Dutchmans Casual Living in Highlands, N.C.

A custom-made Duralee sectional and recliners with nailhead details anchor the living room in modern traditional style. Flanking the fireplace are built-in cabinets and matching windows, which combine with the placement of family photos and lamps to balance the room.

A wet bar with a Cambria Torquay quartz countertop, wine cooler and beverage center just off of the sitting room makes it easy for Decatur homeowners Denise and Scott Bailey to entertain friends and coworkers. They worked with Perry Walter from Walter Studio Interior Design.

Denise Bailey says her new Decatur kitchen, equipped with Thermador appliances, is the hub of the house and works great for the family of five. Dark Silestone countertops contrast with the white oversized subway tile backsplash and cupboards, while white Cambria Torquay quartz tops the stained island.

In the upstairs guest bedroom, an Ethan Allen bed with Pottery Barn bedding complements a family heirloom side table. Paintings in the room are by Keith Spencer.

Daughter Caroline Bailey wanted a wood wall in her bedroom. The stained cedar feature wall provides a rustic backdrop for her blue-and-white bedding, blue lamps and wooden nightstands. Caroline's bedding is from One King's Lane, and the accent pillows are from Target.

In Caroline Bailey's bedroom, a nook provides the perfect space for the high school senior's study desk, which is actually an antique Irish pub table.

Kieran Bailey's spacious bedroom includes several built-in storage areas. A blue rug complements the middle-schooler's bright red Liverpool Football Club comforter, while the barn door's sliding rail gives him extra hanging space to display more soccer fan gear.

Patrick Lockman, who built Scott and Denise Bailey's 4,000-square-foot Decatur home, is known for his built-ins and secret rooms. Throughout the home, including son Kieran's room, the Baileys used built-in bookcases to reduce clutter and for extra storage. Atop the window and bookcase trim, Kieran displays a series of fish folk art by Kingston Springs, Tenn., folk artist Bebo.

A rug from Balance Design ties together the dark hardwood floors and pale green walls in Denise and Scott Bailey's master bedroom. Their cherry-stained four-poster bed by Stanley Furniture and matching nightstands are centered between two Craftsman-style windows.

Dove Grey cabinets from Kitchen Gallery of Stone Mountain and custom-made mirrors by Doors By Mike give Scott and Denise Bailey their own space to get ready each morning. Light fixtures from Progressive Lighting and Go Geo Tundra floor tiles, which have the look of vein cut marble and were ordered through Specialty Tile, maintain the white-gray color scheme.

The splurge-worthy master bath in the Decatur residence includes a steam shower and two towel warmers, along with heated floors and a soaking tub from MTI with a heated backrest.

Towel storage is built into the bathroom wall, maximizing every inch of space in the new Decatur home. The home was built by Lockman Homebuilding Co.

Shiplap surrounds the MTI soaking tub in Scott and Denise Bailey's master bath in Decatur. The well-thought-out space also has heated floors, and the tub has a heated backrest.
