The New York Times reported tonight that Comcast has agreed to acquire Time Warner Cable for $45 billion. It credits David Faber of CNBC to breaking the story.

The announcement is expected to be made Thursday, the Times wrote.

If the government clears the merger, it would combine the No. 1 cable carrier with the No. 2 carrier.  But it will likely draw anti-trust scrutiny.

Time Warner Cable is not available in metro Atlanta but Comcast dominates the region.

A smaller operator Charter Communications had been trying to acquire Time Warner Cable but Time Warner rejected their offer.

Four years ago, Comcast purchased NBCUniversal from GE Electric for $30 billion.
