The documentary will cover Lewis’ childhood and his 60-plus years in public service. He will recount his first meeting with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1957 and how he became one of King’s trusted supporters.

"John Lewis is a national treasure whose leadership paved the way for a generation," said Dawn Porter, founder of Trilogy Films and director of the feature. "There has never been a more urgent need for the type of moral and compassionate leadership that he embodies."

The documentary will talk to his family, political colleagues and others who figured prominently in his life. Rare and recently-discovered writings will be included.

CNN Films is behind the Academy Award-nominated "RBG" about Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the fascinating "Three Identical Strangers."

Upcoming CNN films include “Apollo 11,” “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound Of My Voice” and “Halston.”
