TV best bets with Bobby Brown, Lil Rel Howery, Jim Carrey, ‘Atypical,’ ‘Always Sunny’

The broadcast TV season hasn’t officially started yet but there is plenty going on.

Jim Carrey returns to TV with his dark Showtime comedy "Kidding." Bobby Brown conveys his own truth about his life on a two-part BET miniseries. Lil Rel Howery gets his first sitcom on Fox. And Rob Lowe stars in a gory Lifetime movie.

On TNT, the final season of “The Last Ship” begins while HBO brings back “The Deuce” for a second season. FX trots out a spinoff of “Sons of Anarchy” called “Mayans M.C.”

Two veteran shows are back as well: season eight of “Shameless” on Showtime and the longest-running live action comedy on TV “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” on FXX for its 13th season.

ABC will air the Miss America pageant minus swimsuits on Sunday.

And Netflix debuts the second seasons of “Atypical” and “Marvel’s Iron Fist.” “

This covers Monday, September 3 through Sunday, September 9, 2018.

MONDAY

"America Ninja Warrior" 8 p.m. NBC — Las Vegas finals night part two.

"So You Think You Can Dance" 8 p.m. Fox — The top four perform.

"His Perfect Obsession" 8 p.m. Lifetime — A teen loses her sight and must use her newly acute remaining senses to help her mom from an unstable monster of a man.

"Better Call Saul" 9 p.m. AMC — Jimmy identifies a new market for his talents. Mike vets a potential partnership. Kim drives a hard bargain.

"Elementary" 10 p.m. CBS — Holmes and Watson race to locate a missing woman when Harlan Emple, Holmes' friend and "Irregulars" mathematics expert, becomes the prime suspect in her disappearance.

"CMT Crossroads" 10 p.m. CMT — Meghan Trainor and Brett Eldredge.

"Lodge 49" 10:15 p.m. AMC — Dud's new relationship goes well. Ernie prepares for the Sovereign Protector ceremony, despite Larry's growing madness.

TUESDAY

"America's Got Talent" 8 p.m. NBC — Live semifinals.

"The Bobby Brown Story" 9 p.m. BET (part one)  The first two hours focus on Bobby Brown's solo career and rocky relationship with Whitney Houston. 

"Carter" 10 p.m. WGN — Harley investigates the death of a man in a car park.

"Castaways" 10 p.m. ABC — Matt attempts a dangerous swim to another part of the island and stumbles upon two other Castaways, Sawyer and Richard.

"Wrecked" 10 p.m. TBS — On the eve of "The Hunt," Martha offers to the survivors' one last meal of their choosing—as long as they can all decide together.

"Mayans M.C." 10 p.m. FX (new series) — Set in a post-Jax Teller world, Ezekiel "EZ" Reyes (JD Pardo) is fresh out of prison and a prospect in the Mayans M.C. charter on the Cali/Mexi border. Now, EZ must carve out his new identity in a town where he was once the golden boy with the American Dream in his grasp.

WEDNESDAY

"America's Got Talent" 8 p.m. NBC — The first semi-finalists get pared. 

"Masterchef" 8 p.m. Fox — The Top Six face the Restaurant Takeover Challenge at Providence in Los Angeles.

"The Bobby Brown Story" 9 p.m. BET (part two) — We see how Bobby Brown hits bottom and comes back.

"Suits" 9 p.m. CBS — Harvey helps Samantha settle an old score. Louis faces a hurdle on the path to fatherhood.

"Greenleaf" 10 p.m. OWN — The Bishop sends Lady Mae into a tailspin when he surprises her with divorce papers.

"The Sinner" 10 p.m. USA — Vera reveals Mosswood's past to Ambrose, leading to a turn in Julian's case.

"It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" 10 p.m. FXX (13th season debut) — Meet Cindy, the new, ethnically diverse female member of the gang who can successfully pull off scams.

THURSDAY

"Save Me" 8 p.m. Starz (new series) — A British drama stars "Walking Dead" star Lennie James, who plays Nelson Nelly Rowe and his search for his missing daughter, who he hasn't seen for more than ten years.

"Match Game" 9 p.m. ABC — Mario Cantone, Sandra Bernhard, Oliver Hudson, Caroline Rhea, Adam Rodriguez and Eva Marcille.

"Jordin Sparks: A Baby Story" 10 p.m. Lifetime  A look at the former "American Idol" winner's pregnancy to her first child.

"Shooter" 10 p.m. USA — As Bob Lee finds himself torn between justice and family, Atlas pivots to a new game plan. Isaac and Nadine investigate an overlooked Jack Long thread. Harris meets with a powerful ally.

"Snowfall" 10 p.m. FX — Franklin resorts to extreme measures when dissatisfaction in his crew reaches a fever pitch.

FRIDAY

"Atypical" 3:01 a.m. Netflix (second season debut)  A peer group for teens with autism helps Sam cope with changes, including Casey's move to a new school, his parents' separation and his college plans.

"Marvel's Iron Fist" 3:01 a.m. Netflix (second season debut)  Now Danny Rand is back in New York City, with an iron fist and big plans. But dark forces have plans of their own.

"First and Last" 3:01 a.m. Netflix  An intimate look at the emotionally charged first and last days of new and soon-to-be released inmates at Georgia's Gwinnett County Jail.

"Stand Up to Cancer" 8 p.m. ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox — Reese Witherspoon, Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Garner and Ed Helms are among the celebrities involved.

"The Paynes" 9 p.m. OWN — Curtis realizes he was right about Nyla all along.

"Wynonna Earp" 9 p.m. Syfy  It's date night in Purgatory, which means dressing up, drinking, and fighting demons, as a formidable former foe stalks the gang.

"Killjoys" 10 p.m. Syfy — An awkward Jaqobis homecoming takes a deadly turn as Dutch and Zeph risk everything for science.

WEEKEND

"Her Boyfriend's Secret" 9 p.m. Saturday Lifetime — When home renovator Melissa Davis strikes up a new relationship with her client, John Anderson, she believes she's found the guy of her dreams. However, when John's ex, Carrie, appears with a grave warning, Melissa learns that her dream man has a dark secret that he'll kill to protect.

"The Bad Seed" 8 p.m. Sunday Lifetime — Rob Lowe stars in this remake of a 1956 horror classic.

"Black Girls Rock" 8 p.m. Sunday BET — Queen Latifah hosts. Performers include Yolanda Adams, Fantasia, Stephanie Mills, Tamia and Jazmine Sullivan.

"Married to Medicine" 8 p.m. Sunday Bravo — After Mariah accuses Damon of infidelity, Heavenly channels her rage by seeking help from an anger management therapist.

"Power" 8 p.m. Sunday Starz (fifth season finale) — With Kanan dead, the repercussions continue to reverberate.

"Rel" 8 p.m. Sunday Fox (new series) — A recently divorced father (Lil Rel Howery) makes a fresh start on the west side of Chicago with help from his best friend, younger brother, and dad.

"Fear the Walking Dead" 9 p.m. Sunday AMC — Strand and Dorie are marooned. Luciana aids a man in need. The group's efforts to help a stranger put everyone in danger.

"The 2019 Miss America Organization" 9 p.m. Sunday ABC — No more swimsuits.

"The Deuce" 9 p.m. Sunday HBO (second season debut) — Season 2 opens in 1977, when Vincent is now proprietor of a new mob-backed disco, Club 366, while his girlfriend, Abby, brings the nascent punk-rock culture into the Hi-Hat.

"The Last Ship" 9 p.m. Sunday TNT (fifth season debut) — The Season 5 premiere picks up three years after the global famine. The U.S. Navy is ready to unveil its first fully functional fleet since the Red Flu pandemic, but a new type of threat may mean the next world war.

"Shameless" 9 p.m. Sunday Showtime (ninth season debut) — Frank's latest sexual escapades get him into trouble with the Hopkins Academy PTA.

"Kidding" 10 p.m. Sunday Showtime (new series) — Jeff Pickles (Jim Carrey) decides it's time to talk about death on "Mr. Pickles' Puppet Time." The first episode is already out on Facebook, sho.com and YouTube:
