Prince died a day before he was scheduled to meet with a doctor to fight his addiction to painkillers.
The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported Wednesday that Prince's representatives called Dr. Howard Kornfeld, a national authority on opioid addiction, on April 20 because the musician was "dealing with a grave medical emergency."
That information comes from William Mauzy, a Minneapolis attorney working with the Kornfeld family.
Prince died on April 21.
Kornfeld runs Recovery Without Wall is Mill Valley, Calif. He wasn’t able to rush to Minneapolis April 21, but planned to fly out the following day.
Kornfeld sent his son, Andrew Kornfeld, who works with him, to Prince’s Paisley Park compound “to quickly evaluate his health and devise a treatment plan,” Mauzy said.
Andrew Kornfeld took a red-eye flight from San Francisco and was expected to meet with Prince early Thursday, April 21, the day after Prince’s representatives called, Mauzy said.
According to the Star-Tribune, When Andrew Kornfeld arrived at Paisley Park at 9:30 a.m. April 21, Prince’s representatives could not find him. Andrew Kornfeld was one of three people at Paisley Park when the musician’s body was found in an elevator a few minutes later. Andrew Kornfeld was also the person who called 911.
Mauzy said that Andrew Kornfeld told him that the others “screamed” when they found Prince and “were in too much shock” to call 911.
Unfamiliar with Paisley Park, Andrew Kornfeld simply told the dispatcher, “We’re at Prince’s house.”
