Musicians ranging from Paul McCartney to Jack Antonoff paid their respects to Tom Petty on social media following the death of the 66-year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Monday night in California.

The range of condolences - Ryan Adams, Billy Idol, Cyndi Lauper, Cameron Crowe - signified the massive reach of Petty's music throughout his 40-year career.

Several posted throwback photos of Petty in his younger years, trademark flaxen hair in a simple part and a smile - or rock star grimace - on his face.

Here is what some had to say about the loss of Petty.
