Leonard Cohen has died at the age of 82

BY MELISSA RUGGIERI/AJC Music Scene

Influential singer-songwriter-novelist Leonard Cohen has died.

The Canadian musician’s Facebook page doesn’t provide any details other than an announcement of his death.

“We have lost one of music’s most revered and prolific visionaries,” the statement says.

A memorial for Cohen, who was 82, will be held in Los Angeles at a yet-to-be-announced date.

Though he released 14 albums throughout his nearly 50-year career, his visceral ballad “Hallelujah,” from his 1984 album, “Various Positions,” has been covered by more than 300 artists, most notably Jeff Buckley, who recorded it in 1994 (his version charted in 2007).

Cohen’s most recent album, “You Want it Darker,” was released only a few weeks ago. The nine-song collection received universal critical acclaim and debuted at No. 10 on the Billboard 200 album chart, as well as hitting No. 1 in his native Canada.

Check out this beautiful profile of him in The New Yorker.
