An authorized documentary about Kurt Cobain, “Montage of Heck,” will debut on HBO next year.
The film is written, directed and produced by Brett Morgen, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind the Rolling Stones’ HBO presentation “Crossfire Hurricane” as well as “The Kid Stays in the Picture.”
Cobain’s daughter, Frances Bean, is executive producer.
This is the first documentary made about Cobain with his family’s cooperation. Morgen was given access to the Cobain archives, including never-before-seen home movies, recordings, artwork, photos, journals and songbooks. The film will feature dozens of Nirvana songs and performances as well as previously unheard Cobain originals.
Morgen began work on the project eight years ago and discovered more than 200 hours of unreleased music and audio and 4,000 pages of writings. These personal Cobain archives will, Morgen said, “help paint an intimate portrait of an artist who rarely revealed himself to the media.”
