No one tunes into the Oscars for greatness from the music performances. There isn’t the expectation of Twitter-worthy pairings as on the Grammys or train wrecks in waiting (thank you, MTV Video Music Awards for never disappointing).

But the Oscars usually do a commendable job of wrangling enough key music moments that don’t overshadow the real star of the night: Hollywood ego.

Sunday’s show offered a series of perfectly…fine performances from a disparate array of acts.

Some thoughts (and feel free to share yours in the comments):

In other music moments, Jennifer Hudson, who is always stellar when called upon to deliver in big moments, was the perfect mixture of soaring diva and vulnerable balladeer during her performance of "I Can't Let Go" during the In Memoriam segment. One quibble having nothing to do with music: No Joan Rivers mention? Really?

And

Lady Gaga

earned a deserved standing ovation for her tribute to “The Sound of Music.”  Backed by an orchestra, Lady G showed once again that when you strip away the overdone wackiness, she is a tremendous vocalist and she proved it on a medley of  “The Sound of Music,” “My Favorite Things” and “Climb Every Mountain" (and earned kudos from Julie Andrews!). Bravo, indeed.

One final note: Please go see "Whiplash." You won't be disappointed.
