The “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” will likely have a completely different look in “The Hip-Hop Nutcracker,” which sets choreography by the artistic director of a Brooklyn hip-hop crew to Tchaikovsky’s famed score.
The contemporary show – a family-friendly offering – debuted last year in New York and New Jersey and this season will embark on an 11-city tour that includes a performance at the Fox Theatre at 2 p.m. Nov. 28.
Tickets, priced at $25.50-$75.50, go on sale at 10 a.m. Aug. 29.
The Atlanta stop will also include special guest MC Kurtis Blow, a rap legend best known for his 1980 classic, “The Breaks.”
Directed and choreographed by Jennifer Weber, the artistic director of Brooklyn’s all-female hip-hop dance crew, Decadancetheatre, “The Hip-Hop Nutcracker” includes hip-hop interludes and remixes from DJ Boo and violinist Filip Pogády as well as moves from a team of a dozen dancers.
The “Nutcracker” story, reimagined by Mike Fitelson, executive director of New York’s United Palace of Cultural Arts, transforms the traditional palace of sugarplums into a romance set in 1980s-era Brooklyn.
Tickets for the show can be purchased at www.foxtheatre.org, by calling 1-855-285-8499 or at the Fox box office. Discounted tickets are available for groups of 10 or more by calling 1-404-881-2000.
