More than 40 years after its release, we finally have confirmation of one of the best-kept secrets in pop music – the subject of Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain.”
Well, at least partial confirmation.
Simon revealed to People magazine that at least one verse of the 1972 hit is about Warren Beatty, whom she dated in the early '70s.
That would be this one:
You had me several years ago when I was still quite naive
Well you said that we made such a pretty pair
And that you would never leave
But you gave away the things you loved and one of them was me
I had some dreams, they were clouds in my coffee
Clouds in my coffee, and...
Simon, though, added that the rest of the song refers to other paramours, but she doesn’t intend to divulge their identities.
The singer spoke to the magazine about her upcoming memoir, “Boys in the Trees,” which arrives later this month.
For years, fans and media have speculated about the subject of the self-involved cad(s) in Simon’s song. She has shared the information a handful of times – notably with Howard Stern (off the air) when she appeared on his SiriusXM radio show in 2008.
Beatty, meanwhile, has always maintained the song was about him, but Simon is only willing to fess up about one verse.
“Warren thinks the whole thing is about him!” she joked.
In 2013, she joined the Taylor Swift Onstage Squad in Massachusetts to perform “Vain” as a duet – which was actually pretty great.
