The Piano Man is heading back to Atlanta.
Billy Joel will make his first solo appearance since 2007 at Philips Arena on Feb. 28. Tickets, priced at $53.50-$128.50, will go on sale at 10 a.m. Nov. 21. An American Express pre-sale begins on Nov. 17.
The show was announced Wednesday morning at a press conference held at the arena, an honor that Live Nation Atlanta president Peter Conlon said is reserved for artists of a certain stature.
“Billy has a long history in Atlanta, going back to the Electric Ballroom,” Conlon said, adding that Joel’s current residency at Madison Square Garden is proof of his rare longevity.
“Any artist who can do a residency in an arena just shows great talent and broad appeal,” Conlon said.
Conlon was joined at the press conference by Trey Feazell, executive vice president and general manager of Philips Arena and LaRonda Sutton, director of the Office of Film & Entertainment for City of Atlanta.
Joel’s return to Atlanta has been in the works for about a year. This will be his third time playing Philips Arena as a solo artist (he first played the venue in December 1999). And, Conlon insists, there will only be one show.
“He’s only playing a few dates a month, so that he chose us is a great honor,” said Feazell. “I think that top talent likes to come to Philips.”
Joel has sold more than 150 million albums in his career on the strength of beloved classics such as “Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song),” “Only the Good Die Young,” “You May Be Right” and, of course, “Piano Man.”
