FRIDAY
Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers
Some music listeners might only remember Hornsby from his late-‘80s run of radio hits – “The Way it Is,” “Mandolin Rain” and “The Valley Road” among them. But the Williamsburg, Va., native long ago deserted the chase for radio play, preferring instead to hone his piano/keyboard craft with Ricky Skaggs, The Grateful Dead and Branford Marsalis, while working steadily with The Noisemakers, his band since 2002.
With Nicki Bluhm.cq 8 p.m. July 13. $56.50 (members $54.50). Atlanta Botanical Garden, 1345 Piedmont Ave. NE, Atlanta. 404-876-5859, atlantabg.org.
SATURDAY
Tedeschi Trucks Band
Before making their SweetWater 420 Fest debut in April, Derek Trucks talked to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution about the band's summer tour with Athens-rooted Drive-By Truckers and The Marcus King Band. This is the fourth summer that Trucks, his wife Susan Tedeschi and their crew of jam-happy musicians are on the road for a "Wheels of Soul" tour and Trucks loves the interactions. "It makes you realize how fortunate you are that you do what you do and get to share that with other groups who do what you do," he said.
With Drive-By Truckers and The Marcus King Band. 7:30 p.m. July 14. $29-$125. Fox Theatre, 660 Peachtree St. NE, Atlanta. 1-855-285-8499, foxtheatre.org.
REO Speedwagon and Chicago
In the annual mix-and-match game of summer tours, this is one sure to evoke nostalgia given the hit lists of both Illinois-birthed outfits. Chicago will mix things up by performing its “Chicago II” album in its entirety – for the first time ever on tour – as well as a set of radio favorites, while REO promises a mix of “fan favorites and deep cuts.”
7:30 p.m. July 14. $29.50-$99.50. Verizon Amphitheatre at Encore Park, 2200 Encore Parkway, Alpharetta. 1-800-745-3000, ticketmaster.com.
TUESDAY
Steve Miller Band
Calling it an “extension” of last year’s tour, Steve Miller and his band will again team with Peter Frampton for 40 dates of guitar-based classics. This is the 50th anniversary of the Steve Miller Band, and the set list stretches back to 1968 with “Livin’ in the U.S.A” and also hopscotches through the ‘70s and ‘80s with “Jungle Love,” “Fly Like an Eagle” and “Abracadabra.” Frampton is expected to join Miller onstage – as well as perform his own set – for a nightly guitar duel.
With Peter Frampton. 7 p.m. July 17. $39-$115. Verizon Amphitheatre at Encore Park, 2200 Encore Parkway, Alpharetta. 1-800-745-3000, ticketmaster.com.
