Alex Cooley was so integral to the Atlanta music scene that it’s only fitting his “Celebration of Life” will include performances from well-known locals including Blackberry Smoke, Drivin’ N’ Cryin’ and Kristian Bush.
The memorial for Cooley, the legendary concert promoter who died Dec. 1 at the age of 75 , will take place from 7-9 p.m. Saturday at The Tabernacle.
Though the event is free and open to the public, a ticket is required for entrance. Tickets are available only through www.ticketmaster.com on a first-come, first-served basis. There are no ticket fees or service charges. Tickets are for reserved balcony seating only.
Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.
Along with the musical tributes, video memorials will be interspersed throughout the event, which is being hosted by Kaedy Kiely, morning show host for 97.1 The River.
“This is what he wanted, something that would be more of a celebration of his life and not a funeral,” said Peter Conlon, president of Live Nation Atlanta who was a decades-long friend and business partner of Cooley’s and was instrumental in coordinating the Tabernacle gathering.
“We’re encouraging everyone who felt a connection to Alex and want to show their appreciation to come,” Conlon said. “It will be an uplifting night and a nice way to remember him.”
On Monday, Cooley's memory was honored by the City of Atlanta . Mayor Kasim Reed presented his family with the Phoenix Award and Jan. 4, 2016 was proclaimed "Alex Cooley Day" in Atlanta.
