Beer Pick: Sierra Nevada’s 2019 Oktoberfest with Germany’s Bitburger

ajc.com

Oktoberfest officially began on Sept. 21 this year, and celebrations all around Atlanta are continuing into October.

On Saturday, one of may favorite Oktoberfest parties is back at Brick Store Pub in Decatur, with dirndls, lederhosen, liter mugs, the passing of das Boot, and traditional German food.

Of course, there will be plenty of German-style beer on draft, too, including classic Ayinger, plus Victory Festbeir, and the annual Sierra Nevada Octoberfest collaboration.

And in honor of all that, Sierra Nevada’s 2019 Oktoberfest is this week’s Beer Pick.

Available on draft and in 12-ounce bottles

Profile

This year, Sierra Nevada partnered with Germany’s Bitburger Brewery for its annual Oktoberfest collaboration. The big news is it was brewed with Bitburger’s “custom yeast” and secret hop blend called Siegelhopfen, meaning “Sealed Hops”— “two house ingredients never shared outside their walls until now,” according to Sierra Nevada.

The result is a traditional marzen-style Oktoberfest, with a beautifully vivid reddish-amber color and a smooth malty flavor, with sweet caramel and toffee notes balanced by a refined yeast and hop presence, thanks to Bitburger.

Pair with

Sierra Nevada usually recommends pairing Oktoberfest with weisswurst sausage, roast pork, and other classic German Oktoberfest dishes. But I recently enjoyed a couple of pints on draft during Taco Tuesday at Steinbecks, where it proved be a perfect match for carnitas, salsa verde, fresh corn tortillas, and borracho beans.
