Long-time Atlanta artist Susan Cofer will give a free talk at the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center at 2 p.m. Aug. 22.
The cultural center is hosting Cofer's third exhibition there in 30 years, "Recapitulation, 1963-2015: Drawings and Sculptures by Susan Cofer."
Cofer is known for her intricate and delicate abstract drawings in which images emerge from a minute network of pencil lines. Her sculptural portraits of prominent cultural figures in Atlanta also involve a meticulous process of papier-mâché making. This exhibit, according to the cultural center, "invites the viewer to consider the pursuit of transcendence through process."
When the High Museum of Art mounted a retrospective of Cofer's work in 2011-12, it was titled "Draw Near," a literal suggestion for viewers of the drawings whose highly detailed surfaces prompt close scrutiny.
"Recapitulation" remains on view at the Madison cultural center, which occupies a renovated 1895 Romanesque Revival school building in the historic town, through Aug, 30. 434 S. Main St., Madison. 877-233-0598, www.mmcc-arts.org.
The Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia, the Buckhead visual arts showplace that mounted a Cofer retrospective in 2010, is organizing one in its series of ArtMERGE field trips to Cofer's Madison talk. Participants will meet at Madison-Morgan Cultural Center at 12:30 for an exhibit tour ($15) before the free talk in the auditorium by Cofer and exhibit curator Asen Kirin, associate director of the University of Georgia's Lamar Dodd School of Art. 404-367-8700, www.mocaga.org.
