A high wind advisory is in effect until 10 p.m. Thursday following Wednesday’s severe storms, the National Weather Service said.

Power had to be restored to more than 10,000 Georgia Power customers Thursday, spokeswoman Holly Crawford said. The company has not ruled out the role gusty winds may have played in the outages.

Wind gusts reached 39 mph, which was strong enough to take down weak trees, according to Channel 2 Action News.

Wednesday’s storms also dumped a record 4.27 inches of rain on Atlanta.

The cold front behind the storms brought temperatures down.

Current temperatures are 55 degrees in Atlanta, 42 in Blairsville and 60 in LaGrange.

The severe weather prompted a ground stop at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and flight cancellations.

Hundreds of stuck passengers were still at the airport Thursday.

A family of six from Norway slept in the atrium Wednesday night. They face another night at the airport because they cannot fly to their final destination — Disney World and SeaWorld in Orlando — until Friday.

“(The kids) are disappointed and very tired,” Kathrine Ravnevand said Thursday morning, 12 hours after they were supposed to leave Atlanta.

Another passenger, James Stanley of Sulphur, La., said he and three other people were en route to Sarasota, Fla., when they got stuck during a layover in Atlanta.

“We didn’t actually fall asleep until about 4 this morning,” he said.

Before waters receded in Clayton County, flooding overtook several roads and trapped a pregnant woman in her car on Upper Riverdale Road, Channel 2 reported.

The woman was freed without injury.

In other parts of North Georgia, storm damage made rescue efforts difficult for firefighters.

Crews had to take cover in Walton County as they tried to rescue homeowners, Channel 2 reported.
